Hard up youths who may have missed school this semester will have a chance at education with a course of their choice.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has partnered with 14 technical vocational institutions to make available a total of 5,532 scholarship slots to poor but deserving students, who want to pursue tech-voc education.
The beneficiaries were selected from districts 1 and 4 and from the lone district of San Jose del Monte.
A ceremonial turnover of the scholarship vouchers was held on July 16 during the Scholars Day at the San Jose del Monte covered court, which was attended by the beneficiaries and representatives of technical vocational schools.
The activity was organized with the Bulacan Association of Technical Schools (BATS) and the local government unit.
"TESDA scholars are almost always the ones who are burdened with limited resources, but who have the potential to be something more. We want to be at the right place at the right time for them," TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said.
The scholarships are under TESDA's Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP).
The TWSP aims to give training that would fill the skills gap and job requirements of priority industries and sectors with high employment demand.
Villanueva said that TESDA continues to improve the reach of quality technical vocational education to the grassroots and works to encourage technical vocational institutions to offer programs in qualifications that will cater to the demands of industries.
After training, TESDA offers free competency assessment to the graduates to ensure they have quality skills and are qualified to receive the National Certificate.
Certified graduates are also linked to potential employers through job fairs.
