MANILA, Philippines – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has approved P5 million-worth of scholarship grant to the province of Cebu.
Under the Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP) of TESDA, poor high school graduates in the province can avail of the scholarships which include courses in commercial cooking, housekeeping, food and beverage, welding, machining, and refrigeration and air-conditionings.
The training will be provided by the University of the Visayas and Regional Training Center.
TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said that the grant aims not only to help the poor students get access to education but “it also aims to promote technical-vocational courses in the area.”
Through the “Cebu City Government College Scholarship Program,” TESDA has also forged a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Cebu City government and a division of the Department of Education (DepEd) to carry out the granting of scholarships to deserving high school graduates.
“The MOA offers as much as P20, 000-financial assistance to qualified applicants.” A total of 124 high school graduates have already availed of the scholarships.
In Cebu City, Villanueva noted that around almost 90 percent of high school graduates from public schools do not have the opportunity to proceed to college education.
Statistics show that the primary reason for this is because of their family’s fiscal limitation.
The MOA stated that the Cebu City government will allocate funds sufficient for all the scholars’ training fee, miscellaneous and other fees for technical-vocational short term courses.
Villanueva added that the Cebu City government will grant a maximum of P10, 000 for graduates of high schools located in the urban area of the city while a maximum of P20, 000 will be given to graduates from high schools located in the mountain area of Cebu.
DepEd-Cebu will be responsible for the dissemination of information regarding the program and the issuance of guidelines for the selection of deserving public high school graduates based on the MOA.
TESDA will give education and trainings on 13 courses including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I, Building Wiring NC II; Ref. and Aircon Servicing NC I, Plumbing NC I, Machining NC II, Computer Aided Design, Consumer Electronics Servicing, Household Service Worker NC II, Automotive Servicing NC I, NC II, and NC III, and Dressmaking NC II.
