Twenty technical vocational (tech-voc) trainees will represent the Calabarzon region at the national finals after topping the regional skills competition.

The regional contest is held annually by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to demonstrate the competencies of tech-voc graduates and skilled workers in their respective trade areas.

Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA director general, said that aside from rewarding and recognizing the winners, the competition is also a means to promote tech-voc among the youth and the unemployed. It is also an opportunity for the tech-voc graduates to get discovered by potential employers once they graduate.

"There's a well of undiscovered talents in some small tech-voc schools. The skills competition is a concerted effort by TESDA, tech-voc institutions and local government units to find the most competent and develop them further," he said.

Villanueva attended the event's kick-off ceremony and challenged the youth competitors to go beyond their comfort zone to achieve greater heights.

The 20 gold medalists came from the dozens of participants in the Calabarzon competition held from November 26 to 28. After the opening ceremony at the Saint Michael's College of Laguna in Biñan City, the competition in different trade areas proceeded in select tech-voc schools in the region.

While there were a total of 32 winners, only the gold medalists will compete at the Philippine national Skills Competition to be held in 2014. They will undergo intensive training to make them fit in excelling in the trade areas where they would be competing.

During the regional skills competition, each participant was given a test package that contains instructions on the required output to be completed at a given time. A panel of judges will rate the competitors based on a given criteria.

Three winners were chosen per trade area for the gold, silver, and bronze awards. They received certificates and cash prizes. The gold winner must meet the 500-points criteria as prescribed in the standard.

The test packages used were based on the 9th Asean Skills Competition held in Jakarta and the 42nd World Competition held in Alberta, Canada.
