Caraga region will make a dash for medals at the Philippine National Skills Competition with its crop of competent technical vocational graduates recently selected from a region-wide skills contest.

The two-day 2013 Regional Skills Competition among provinces under CARAGA revealed the top tech-voc graduates who emerged winners in various trade areas, and who will get the chance to compete at the national finals. The national winners will represent the country at the ASEAN Skills Competition.

The regional contest, organized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) together with the CARAGA Association of Technical Vocational Institutions, Inc. (CATVII), gathered together competitors from technical vocational institutions in the region.

Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA director general, said the competitions give an invaluable experience among graduates in applying the best of the skills they have learned in the schools.

"The national skills competition will give tech-voc graduates a great opportunity to demonstrate their combination of learned skills and knowledge, while gaining exposure to business professionals and potential employers and promoting tech-voc among the youth and the unemployed," Villanueva said.

CARAGA is an administrative region on the north-eastern portion of Mindanao, designated as Region XIII.  It is composed of five provinces: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands.

The city of Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte hosted the Regional Skills Competition held at the Candelaria Institute of Cabadbaran.

Inocencio Angeles Jr., president of CATVII, said Caraga will put up a good fight at the national finals.

"We shall showcase the skills and capabilities of our trainees as we prepare them in accordance to international standards, particularly the ASEAN standard," he said.

Florencio Sunico Jr., TESDA-CARAGA regional director, said that the winners will undergo massive training and coaching with experts in the schools and enterprises to boost their chances at the national competition.

The winners in the respective trade areas are:

Jorlex Solde Villa for Food and Beverage Services
Junrel Adante for Electrical Technology
Greg Gauden Mundiz for Plumbing and Heating Technology
