Technical-vocational institutions in the Caraga (Region XIII) have their sights trained early on capturing slots in the Skills Competition at the national level by holding their own competition next month.

The regional skills competition slated on November 18 to 19 will showcase the best and the brightest tech-voc graduates in a friendly competition to determine who will stand out in various competencies.

The event will be hosted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Agusan del Norte provincial office and will be held at the covered court of the provincial capitol, and in Butuan City and Cabadbaran City, which have facilities and equipment to cater to the different qualifications, according to TESDA CARAGA Regional Director Florencio Sunico, Jr.

Participants will compete in Food and Beverage Servicing, Electrical Installation and Maintenance, Visual Graphics Design, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, PC Operations, and Commercial Cooking.

Winners of the different trade areas will represent the region in the National Skills Competition slated on the first quarter of 2014 in Metro Manila.

Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA director general, urged other TESDA regional offices to prepare early for the national skills competition, which will in turn select the participants to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Skills Competition that is being held every two years.

"Skills competitions are among the vehicles to showcase the skills of young people and prepare them for future employment," Villanueva said.

"At the ASEAN Skills Competition last year, we showed our neighbors how able and highly-skilled the Filipinos are.  We need to do this again in the future competitions," he added.

The Philippines sent TESDA Specialistas in November last year at the ASEAN Skills Competition in Indonesia, where they competed in various qualifications.  The participants, chosen all over the country, underwent stringent preparation that included physical development, skills and knowledge enhancement, industry immersion, psychological preparation and value formation.

Meanwhile, the Caraga Association of Technical Vocational Institutions, Inc. enjoined its members to actively support the event.

Incocensio Angeles Jr., the group's president, said that showcasing the skills of the graduates will encourage more youth to take up technical vocational courses, and find employment soon.

Sunico said the skills competition will offer opportunity to promote cooperation between and among tech-voc institutions and stakeholders in the region.
