MANILA, Philippines - The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) said it will soon start closing down “bogus” and “below standard” technical-vocational schools and institutions.
In a press release, TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said these tech-voc schools better shape up and be on par with global benchmarks.
“Our goal is to produce quality, globally-competitive graduates; to make sure that our tech-voc graduates will be employed whether here or abroad after their trainings. We have to take action against these kinds of tech-voc schools and institutions and close them down,” he said.
He lamented that several tech-voc schools have below standard training modules, subsequently producing graduates not competitive enough to secure employment here or even abroad.
Other schools, on the other hand, have “average” training modules, but otherwise charge exorbitant tuition fees.
Villanueva refrained from disclosing the names of the schools pending the completion of further analysis and assessments.
He said TESDA will tap local government units and the association of tech-voc institutions to run after the schools.
“We will pursue this path and we will be ready to defend our agency for this effort. Besides who will look after the welfare of our kawawang tech-voc students,” he said.
