More than 40,000 jobs were up for grabs on Tuesday at the job fair organized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Labor and Employment in Tarlac City in celebration of Labor Day.
A total of 126 local employers and overseas recruitment agencies were at the fair, as thousands of graduates, including technical vocational graduates of TESDA came armed with their credentials to try out for their future job.
President Benigno Aquino III made the rounds in various booths installed at St. Michael's Park in Camp Sevillano Aquino, San Miguel in Tarlac City to check out the job postings. He was accompanied by Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA director general, and Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz.
"We honor the country's workers on Labor Day, and the government is doing all it can to make their lives better through more and better services," Villanueva said.
"The other face of Labor Day is opening the avenues of opportunity to people, including TESDA graduates, to be employed and join the workforce so that they would be productive members of society, and we believe this is an important purpose that job fairs serve," he said.
For the one-day fair, a total of 40,874 postings were made available to the applicants by the 70 local employers and 50 overseas recruitment agencies.
Among the firms and employers who participated were from the business process outsourcing industry and other companies offering in-demand skills.
Several applicants were hired on the spot, while a number were asked to stand-by for further processing of their application.
"Job fairs make the applicants think that 'this will be the one.' I urge them to continue bearing the attitude, try it out on which would best suit their skills because it is a way for young people to get a foot into the workforce," Villanueva said.
Simultaneous with the job fair, TESDA set up booths that offered health and wellness treats like free haircut, massage, foot spa, manicure and pedicure. It also treated the audience with skills demonstration on cocktail mixing, cake decoration and quick culinary arts.
Representatives of other government agencies were also present to offer a one-stop-shop for processing the needs for records of the applicants, such as the Social Security System, Bureau of Internal Revenue, National Bureau of Investigation, PhilHealth, Pag-Ibig and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
