The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) recently launched two major initiatives in Central Visayas focused on women and the youth to help build a skilled workforce for the region’s sustained growth.

The agency partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development for the Cash for Training Project (C4TP) and with Coca Cola Bottlers Corporation for the Coke-TESDA Sari-Sari Store Training and Access to Resources (S3TAR), which were both rolled out in Mandaue City as part of a major program to boost technical vocational education and training (TVET) in the area.

“We are trying to create multiple pathways to learning, but with one direction towards widening access to TVET and potentials for quality employment,” Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA Director General, said.

“A skilled workforce will strengthen the foundation of businesses and industries as well as improve social stability, especially in a region that is highly urbanized as Central Visayas,” Villanueva added.

For the Cash for Training Project, TESDA and DSWD aim to hand out a total of 3,286 scholarship vouchers for the beneficiaries in the region.

Designed to train disadvantaged youths for possible employment or entrepreneurial activities, the C4TP will provide training to match the specific needs of the market.  TESDA and its partner training institutions will provide the training.

The program will be implemented in two independent components, namely, training for wage employment and training for self-employment.  Local government units, training providers, and non-government organizations will help the graduates in either seeking employment after finishing the course or in starting their own business.

The students may enroll in the following available courses: Animal Production NC II, Automotive Servicing NC II, Driving NC II, Carpentry, Plumbing, EIM NC II, Electronic Servicing NC II, Dressmaking/ Tailoring NC II, Bartending, Commercial Cooking, Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Services, Bread and Pastry Production, and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC II.

The Coke-TESDA S3TAR Project, meanwhile, targets women sari-sari store operators in need of formal training to enhance their business knowledge and skills.

A total of 1,000 women sari-sari store operators will be beneficiaries of the program to be implemented in partnership with the local government units of Bogo City and Balamban City and the Cebu Federation of Women’s Club. Training started this month.

"We will always look forward to partnerships with both the private sector and local government units for opportunities that will bring technical vocational education and training in the hands of those who need them most," Villanueva said.
