The selection of women sari-sari store owners who will train under the Coke-TESDA S3TAR Program is now underway.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Coca-Cola Bottlers Corporation, which jointly manage the program, finished signing an agreement with the local government of three Metro Manila cities and nine provinces for the training of the women beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries will come from Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva  Ecija, Palawan, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Davao, Pasay-Makati and Manila.

The program is under the National Convergence Program on Empowering Women Retailers, which is projected to empower 100,000 women sari-sari store owners and operators all over the Philippines by 2020 by giving them skills training in managing their business.

Coca-Cola disbursed P8 million for the program, which will also include the training of trainers to further enhance their capacity.

“The sari-sari store or variety store, may be the easiest business venture to get into.  One can set up with just a few hundred pesos,”  Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA Director General, said.

“But then, without the necessary managerial skills to handle the business, sari-sari store owners find it hard to make them prosper, or worse, just shut them down only after a few months in operation,” he said.

That’s why the intervention of Coca-Cola and TESDA is not only timely, but a necessity for such ventures, Villanueva said.

A total 189 women beneficiaries are currently on training conducted by TESDA Pasay-Makati District (121) and TESDA Manila District (86) respectively. Additional 34 women beneficiaries started training on December 7.

The other remaining target areas are ready to start training the women beneficiaries as soon as the complete training materials are delivered by Coca-Cola to their respective regions.

As for the training of trainers, three batches of training were conducted at the TESDA Women’s Center in Taguig City in November.

Currently, the S3TAR Program has a total of sixty eight (68) trainers qualified to teach the S3TAR Program Module.
