The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) announced  that  it is extending the period of competency assessment and certification of skilled workers until December 15 to accommodate more applicants.

The National Technical Vocational Education and Training Competency Assessment and Certification (NATCAC) program aims to enable skilled workers and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to go through the competency assessment and become TESDA certified.

Secretary Joel Villanueva said that from the original last date of the NATCAC on October 26, TESDA will give workers and OFWs close to two months more to undergo the assessment and certification.

“The dates earlier allotted proved too tight to accommodate all applicants,” Villanueva, TESDA Director General, said.

He added that the several days that were declared holidays also reduced the days available for the activity.

“Assessment in some provinces are still being conducted because of the limited time, and there are still applicants, who have enlisted earlier, who were not accommodated during the scheduled NATCAC days,” Villanueva said.

TESDA earlier conducted three runs of the nationwide and synchronized competency assessment and certification in identified key qualifications.  The first run was from July 9 to 20, the second assessment ran from August 20 to 31, and the third schedule was from October 15 to 26.

The assessment is free of charge.

If the applicants pass the assessment, they would receive either the National Certificate (NC) or the Certificate of Competency (CoC), giving them the status of a full-fledged certified TESDA Specialista.

Villanueva said the assessment and certification is important for any skilled worker to promote industry acceptance and recognition, similar to a badge that would assure companies that they are hiring highly skilled and competent workers.

"While the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) issues licenses to professionals, TESDA issues NC or CoC as proof of the competency level of skilled workers, and these are recognized by local as well as foreign employers." Villanueva said.

For this year, TESDA targeted to produce 60,000 new holders of the TESDA NC or CoC.

As of November 5, there were a total of 33,312 applicants nationwide, who were assessed.  Of this, 28,680 were certified or a certification rate of 86 percent.

Region I (Ilocos region) and Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) had a 100 percent completion rate based on their targets, while the other regions were still completing their targets.
