Close to 2,000 technical vocational students, employees and scholars of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) led by Secretary Joel Villanueva took part in a charity run for new classrooms to flood victims in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Villanueva himself enlisted in the 3k category run that took place at the stretch of Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

”The organizers and participants of this activity made a choice to run for health and for the welfare of unfortunate students in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.  We hope the fruits of this joint effort will bring hope to the students to be inspired to learn despite their situation,” Villanueva said.

Fila, ICARE Foundation, Athletes in Action, GMA Kapuso Foundation joined hands to organize the activity that drew in around 15,000 participants, including celebrities like models Georgina Wilson and Borgy Manotoc, society columnist Tim Yap, and former track-and-field and long jump champion Elma Muros.

Villanueva was joined by TESDA directors, employees and scholars of various technical vocational courses. Technical vocational students from all over Metro Manila also graced the activity.

“What TESDA can commit as always is relevant education to those who want to develop their skills and find employment later on,” he said.

The proceeds of the fun run will be used to build new classrooms for thousands of students in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, which were battered by floods in December 2011 dues to heavy rains.

The government estimated that it would take billions in pesos to rehabilitate the provinces, including communities that were completely wiped out by floods.
