TESDA unveils ‘Internet of Things’ laboratory in Laguna

Showing its commitment to innovation, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) opened its first Internet of Things (IoT) laboratory at the Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial School of Arts and Trades (JZGMSAT) in Biñan City, Laguna.

Last July 2, TESDA Director General, Secretary Suharto T. Mangudadatu personally graced the inauguration of the laboratory.

In his message, Secretary Mangudadatu emphasized that IoT can revolutionize the way people interact and lead to innovations that enhance connectivity and automation, improving productivity, effectiveness, and quality of life.

“In this laboratory, our students and faculty will have the opportunity to explore, experiment, and innovate.  They will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, develop practical skills, and engage in projects that address real-world challenges,” the Secretary said.

The event's highlight was the demonstration of innovative prototypes developed by JZGMSAT trainers and students of the institution’s Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering Technology program. It showed how the IoT connects various devices to the internet, and how it can be used in smart cities, factories, and homes to enhance life by creating safe, efficient, and comfortable environments through technology.

The prototypes also showcased the practical applications of the IoT in various domains such as “smart home” and “smart green home” systems, and offered insights into the future of residential automation and sustainable living. Additionally, the event featured cutting-edge technologies such as Augmented Reality, 3D Printing and Modeling, and Industry IoT.

In line with TESDA’s NTESDP 2023-2028, Strategic Pillar 5: “Transformative and innovative TVET ecosystem organized and strengthened”, the IoT Laboratory demonstrates JZGMSAT's commitment to advancing technological education and fostering innovation among its students.

Meanwhile, the Secretary also led the inauguration of JZGMSAT’s new four-story, multi-purpose building, which was donated by Biñan City Congresswoman Marlyn Alonte-Naguiat who was also present during the event.

“I have every confidence that the inauguration of these facilities is a starting point for countless innovations and growth, and signals bigger and better things to come,” Secretary Mangudadatu emphasized.

Also present during the ceremony were Biñan City Vice Mayor Angelo Alonte, TESDA Deputy Directors General Vidal D. Villanueva III, Felizardo R. Colambo and Nelly Nita N. Dillera, and other TESDA and local government officials.
