The online program developed by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to make technical-vocational education and training (TVET) accessible anytime and anywhere has been quickly spreading across cyberspace.
After only a month since its formal launch in May, the TESDA Online Program (TOP) has generated more than half a million page views and registered close to 20,000 users.
"To date, we already have 19,968 registered users in just one month since its launching and 553,583 page views," Secretary Joel Villanueva, TESDA Director General said.
The data was contained in a letter to President Benigno Aquino III that detailed the agency's current initiatives on promoting TVET and job generation.
From the pilot run in December, TOP had successful graduates who are now employed such as Griselle Claveria, who took the Computer Hardware Servicing NC II online and is now employed in Singapore.
Jhonathan Luzano, a former sales promoter, is now a laptop and computer technician after completing the online course and passing the national competency assessment.
TESDA is initially offering four online courses, namely: Computer Hardware Servicing NC II, Room Attendant Servicing, a core competency of the Food and Beverage Servicing, Guestroom Attendant Servicing NC II, a core competency of the Housekeeping NC II and Cellphone Servicing, one of the competencies of Consumer Electronics Servicing NC II.
"We are targeting to offer a total of 10 courses within the year as part of the continuous development of online education program," Villanueva said.
The TESDA chief also reported the following to the President:
*Mobile Training plus (Park and Train). Inaugurated on February 10, 2012, the mobile learning center aims to bring to the grassroots the needed technical vocational learning.
The Mobile Training bus has already conducted training programs in Brgy. Bagong Silangan, one of the poorest communities in Quezon City, with a total of 124 graduates and another one in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City with 141 graduates.
The park and train model is replicated in the regions. In Region 7 alone, there are eight (8) mobile training buses and another three in Region 4A, specifically in Batangas.
*TESDA-Coca Cola National Convergence Program on Empowering
Grassroots Women Retailers program.
The program taps women and provides them entrepreneurship skills training to give them opportunities to earn or increase the potential of their current businesses.
A total of 100,000 women all over the country are expected to benefit from this program which will run until 2020.
*TESDA Specialista Technopreneurship Program (TSTP)
With the successful launch of the TSTP, a total of 524 aggrupation have been organized consisting of 5,240 TESDA Specialistas as of end of May 2012.
The groups are now providing services to their respective barangays and communities as self-employed individuals. These consist of the Food and Beverage Services, Welding Services, Caregiver Services, Computer Hardware Services, Appliance Repair Services, Building Repair and Maintenance Services, Beauty Care and Wellness Services and Auto/Vehicle Maintenance Services.
These aggrupation have reported increases in income.

TESDA revived the Philippine National Skills Competition after almost a decade in absence.
The skills competition is in preparation for the country’s participation anew to the 2012 ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia in November this year.
