The Philippines, through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), will send five Filipino competitors in the upcoming 2nd WorldSkills Asia Competition at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

From November 25 to December 1, the competitors will vie for top honors in various skill areas such as Electrical Installations, Graphic Design Technology, IT Network Systems Administration, IT Software Solutions for Business, and Welding.

TESDA Secretary Suharto Mangudadatu noted that the country’s participation in various international competitions will ensure that country’s tech-voc training is at par with the international standards.

“We continue to join international competitions and collaborate with other countries for us to level our training with them. Our competitors will learn a lot through these events, and develop key employability skills such as effective teamwork, communication and time management,” Secretary Mangudadatu said.

The country will send two skills competition medalists from the recently concluded 13th WorldSkills ASEAN Competition in Singapore. Ana Claire Hernandez brought home a silver medal in the Graphic Design Technology skill area, while Cristian Lasaruz Asanza bagged a Medallion for Excellence in Electrical Installation.

Other competitors include Jose Darylle Tolentino for the IT Network Systems Administration skill area, Paul Mark Yu for IT Software Solutions for Business, and Dwight Karl Santos for Welding.

The WorldSkills Asia competition takes place every two years in one of the member countries of the WorldSkills Asia organization.

The event aims to achieve several goals, including inspiring Asian youth and enabling them to develop skills for future jobs, as well as attracting member states and international partners in both private and government educational institutions to encourage talent and develop global standards of skills and competencies across Asia.

It can be recalled that TESDA has been actively participating in international competitions. Section 30 of the Republic Act 7796 or the TESDA Act of 1994 states that TESDA, with the active participation of private industries, shall organize annual skills Olympics to promote quality skills development in the country in view of participating in international skills competitions.
