The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has been offering a number of health-related technical vocational education and training (TVET) courses, especially for those who want to work abroad.

TESDA Director General Danilo P. Cruz said TESDA has technical vocational programs, such as Caregiving NC II and Health Care Services NC II, designed to provide re-skilling training to professionals wanting to shift careers or to add to their existing qualifications.

“This is a valuable opportunity for those seeking jobs abroad.  Tech-voc training programs allow its graduates to be ready with the required skills and knowledge in a relatively short time,” he said.

The Canadian Embassy in the Philippines recently announced that the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is open to hiring hundreds of healthcare workers from the Philippines.

The Caregiving NC II course has a nominal duration of 786 hours (or roughly 5 months), while Health Care Services NC II has 996 hours (or 6 months).  Actual training duration can be longer than this depending on the institution.

“We can also recommend Barangay Health Services NC II, which offers a more community-focused approach, to those who want to add to their skills,” according to TESDA Deputy Director General Aniceto “John” Bertiz III.

“These skills can be applied in almost all localities and not just in our barangays in the country.  With the lessons we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, these community-based healthcare workers play a vital role in containing the spread of infection,” he added.

The core competencies of the Barangay Health Services NC II course include “Assist the household to identify health problems to promote health and well-being” and, “Monitor health status of household members under his/her area of service coverage Maintain updated list/records of health activities” among others.

Barangay Health Services NC II has a nominal duration of 463 hours.

TESDA likewise offers other health-related training, such as Emergency Medical Services NC II, Pharmacy Services NC III, Hilot (Wellness Massage) NC II, Massage Therapy NC II, Dental Laboratory Technology Services NC I and II, Practical Nursing, and Contact Tracing, among many others.

Bertiz also encouraged the public to check first on the TESDA website (https://www.tesda.gov.ph/TVI) if a training program is truly registered with the agency before enrolling to avoid any inconvenience. (30)
