TESDA sets women's confab, cites women in non-traditional trade

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will highlight the success of female technical vocational education and training (TVET) graduates in the areas of non-traditional trade such as construction, welding, plumbing, automotive and others during the 2018 Manila Tradeswomen Conference on March 4.

The Women’s Conference will be held at the Tandang  Sora Hall, TESDA Women’s Center (TWC). Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The event is being staged together with international groups called Building and Wood Workers International (BWI), one of the global union federations composed of sectors from building, wood and forestry with 12 million members, and the U.S. Sisters in the Building Trades, a U.S.-based tradeswomen group of construction workers.

TESDA Director General Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that the occasion will help promote the activities of the agency's Gender and Development (GAD) so that more women will join non-traditional trade.

Some of the  world-class female graduates of the TESDA technical and vocational (tech-voc) were Rebecca Sadang Liyad (General Welding & Steel  Fabrication) , Marilyn O Tusi, (Gas Metal Arc Welding NC lll)  and Irene F. Mendoza (Gas Metal Arc Welding NC lll) ; for the automotive course, Jonnalyn A. Navarossa , (Automotive Servicing NCl l, ll, 1lll & lV), Nina A. Rivero,(Automotive Servicing NC ll), and Leah Rose G. Cruz, (Automotive Servicing).

Teresita “Tes” M. Borgonos, project coordinator ng BWI Asia Pacific Region, said that the event will also showcase the success of women in the construction industry.

Borgonos added that the women's meet will also promote TESDA not just in the Philippines but around the world.

Some 300 women delegates from the Sisters in the Building Trades, BWI, TESDA Women’s Center graduates and trainers are expected to join the gathering.

The BWI has four affiliates in the Philippines: Associated Labour Union (ALU), Association of Construction and Informal Workers (ACIW), Federation of Free Workers (FFW) and National Union of Building and Construction Workers (NUBCW).
