The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has defended its need to increase their budget due to the growing number of students who are interested in technical-vocational (Tech-Voc) courses.
TESDA Director General, Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that up to 2,269,665 students enrolled in various training programs nationwide in 2016. Of this, 2,151,236 students finished their courses while 1,521,530 others have completed assessment.
A total of 1,398,780 students received their certificates after they passed the assessment conducted by TESDA.
TESDA records showed that from 1995 up to 2016, a total of 30,621,180 students enlisted in various training programs; 25,434,151 of them finished their courses; 11,148,144 received their assessment while 9,167,792 others have been certified.
TESDA said that it continues to request to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to increase its budget so that they could give more scholarships to those who want to avail of the skills training program.
Mamondiong said that TESDA needs up to P24 billion budget for their skills training program next year.
Aside from the scholarships, Mamondiong also pushed for the modernization of the Regional Training Centers of TESDA nationwide so that they could provide quality skills training and emergency skills for overseas Filipino workers and other sectors.
TESDA records also showed that the country needs graduates from five industry sectors such as Agribusiness, Construction, Information Technology, Health and Wellness and Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism.
