The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has said that it would be needing P24 billion budget to fund the skills training of 1.5 million Filipinos in 2018.
TESDA Director General, Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that TESDA is expecting a surge in the number of Filipinos who want to avail of the agency's skills training program as the government prioritizes job opportunities in the country.
Mamondiong said that the industries he foresees to be a hit among Filipinos next year are health care and wellness, business processing outsourcing, tourism, construction and agriculture.
The TESDA chief said that he anticipates a big number of Filipinos who want to enrol in skills training in line with these five popular industries.
Mamondiong also said that TESDA will soon open the Training for Work Scholarship for those who want to become caregivers and housekeepers in hotels.
Other TESDA projects include reinforcing the scholarship program and eventually find jobs for the graduates and come up with emergency skills training for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and other sectors.
Mamondiong said that he is seeking an additional budget for the modernization of regional training centers nationwide.
TESDA officials said that the agency's budget for 2017 is only P6.9 billion which is lower as compared to the Department of Education (P567 billion) and Commission on Higher Education (P8.3 billion).
