The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has announced that it will give some 200,000 scholarships in skills training for Mindanao residents in 2017.

TESDA Director General, Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that the scholarships aim to make education accessible to learners in the South.

“I encourage our residents in Mindanao to avail of the skills training program of TESDA, especially those who cannot afford to go to college," said Mamondiong.

A budget of P1.5 billion will be infused in the TESDA skills training in Mindanao.

Of the 200,000 scholarships, 30,000 will be allotted in Regions 9, 11 at 12; 25,000, Region 10 and Caraga; and 60,000, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Mamondiong said that the giving of TESDA scholarships will be done in coordination with the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas which will help promote the program in every barangay in Mindanao.

The TESDA chief has warned local officials not to take advantage of the scholarship project by using them for their political interest.

"It is the goal of President Rodrigo Duterte to provide skills training to all Filipinos, that's why we should never use the TESDA project for our special interest," said Mamondiong.
