Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director General, Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong praised the Filipino team for their sterling performance at the 11th Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) Skills Competition (ASC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last September 19-29.
Mamondiong said that good performance of Team Philippines in the skills competition only proves that Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) of the government is effective and world-class.
“We are very proud of our competitors and their coaches. Not only have they brought honor to the country but they have also cast a very favorable light on Philippine TVET and on all our skilled workers," Mamondiong said.
Mark Anthony Guiao of Central Luzon edged out other competitors from Southeast Asia to win the gold medal in Mechanical Engineering Design – Computer Aided Design. He also won the Best in Nation award for being the best competitor from the Philippines.
Joven Hayagan of Bicol was awarded a silver medal in IT Software Solution for Business (ITSSB) category.
The Team Philippines also bagged an additional four bronze medals in various competition areas. Other winners were: John Louie Pioquinto, Zamboanga, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC); John Harris Soriano, Central Luzon, Electronics; Gelmar Coniendo and Junnel Cagampang, Northern Mindanao, Mechatronics; and Jelanie Dimacaling, Cordillera, Web Design.
Other Filipino who earned six Medallions of Excellence for their respective competition areas: Rommel Florita, Welding; Allen Jay Desamparado, ITSSB; Shane Gabriel Macapagal, Graphics Design Technology; Tristan Joseph Amargo, IT Network Systems Administration (ITNSA); Arbethnel Ilagan, RAC; and, Arianne Liwag and Dan Kervin Del Mundo, Industrial Automation.
The 2016 Philippine Team is composed of 24 competitors and their experts (coaches). It was formed through a stringent selection process which included the Philippine National Skills Competition (PNSC), and a series of “Gold Camps” where the successful PNSC winners and their respective experts underwent skills enhancement exercises and psychological, physical and emotional conditioning.
So far, the country’s performance in the ASC is the best since it re-joined the international skills contest in 2014 after almost a decade-long hiatus.
Held every two years, the ASEAN Skills Competition is the biggest vocational education and skills event that includes competitors from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The event helps promote further development of TVET, fosters technical cooperation between member countries, and encourages close cooperation among TVET stakeholders.
