The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will be sending a 34-member delegation composed of competitors and coaches/experts to try to bring home the gold at the 10th Asean Skills Competition (ASC).

The biennial meet, slated from October 19 to 24, will be hosted by Vietnam this year.

The ASC aims to showcase the skills of students and graduates, and promote and improve technical vocational skills in the region.

The Philippine team will be composed of 18 competitors and 16 coaches/experts who will vie in various trade areas.

"The ASEAN Skills provides an opportunity not just for the tech-voc trainees and coaches, but for the country's technical vocational education and training sector to shine on a prestigious international platform," TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said.

"Through their skills and hard work, our tech-voc graduates in the country and abroad have proven that Filipinos are world-class workers," he said, adding that the skills competition will showcase TESDA's next generation of quality trainees ready to take on jobs anywhere in the world.

The competitors were earlier chosen through skills contests conducted at various levels from provincial, regional and national early this year.  The TESDA National Organizing Committee facilitated the selection of the final list of competitors.

The 18 competitors were considered following a three-week rigorous training program under the guidance of industry experts and practitioners.  The training was capped by a mock-competition last July 29 to 31 using the prescribed test packages used in the competition.

The coaches/experts who will join the competitors were enlisted based on their known technical expertise, integrity and experience in international skills competitions.

The delegates are currently undergoing higher level of training that includes physical development, skills and knowledge enhancement, industry immersion, psychological preparation and value formation.

The competitors and coaches will be joined by a team of TESDA officials to the skills competition.
