To help ease the country's unemployment woes, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) have sealed an understanding for the training of potential workers.
The Memorandum of Understanding signed on August 19, and effective for two years, will promote and expand the reach of technical-vocational training among business chambers, industry and trade associations and individual enterprises.
Called the PCCI-TESDA Tech-Voc Project (PTTP), it will also encourage individual enterprises to make available training spaces in their respective establishments to the trainees.
The parties in the deal also pledged to cooperate by sharing their training facilities, trainers, assessors and training materials.
"With greater industry participation, through the PCCI, in honing the skills of the trainees, the result is a pool of talent armed with the qualifications that the companies need," TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said.
"This is public-private partnership at its best," he added.
For his part, PCCI president Alfredo Yao said: “Companies will provide students with work-based experiences as they develop the specific skills that match what prospective employers want."
“Our schools will then graduate students who possess both the academic skills and technical skills that our industries deem relevant," Yao further said.
TESDA and PCCI will formulate specific action plans to implement the PTTP, which will also be reviewed periodically by both parties.
The PCCI is the largest industry association in the country having local chambers in many provinces.
TESDA and PCCI have partnered in the past to bolster the dual training and apprenticeship system, which gives trainees hands-on experience in the workplace.
Linkages between TESDA and the industries are being institutionalized to ensure that the skills produced by the education system are attuned to the needs of the industry. In turn, this leads to higher employment rate of the graduates and increase in the productivity of companies.
The Memorandum of Understanding for the PTTP was signed by Villlanueva and Yao in a ceremony in Taguig City.
