Leveling up the training of prospective participants to the skills competition, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will hold a training camp to select the best and the most competent crop of technical vocational competitors and coaches who can represent the country in the ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) 2016 in Malaysia this September.
The Gold Camp 2, which will commence on May 23 and end on July 2, will gather tech-voc experts from all over the country and their coaches to undergo a series of training and assessment on the first four weeks.
After each assessment, the competitor with the poorest performance, together with his/ her coach, will be eliminated from the program.
On the fifth week, the remaining teams per skills competition area will compete in the Philippine National Skills Competition (PNSC). The top two finishers in each of the 12 competition areas will represent the country in the 11th ASC. This is with the exception of Mechatronics and Industrial Automation wherein only one team per country is allowed.
The sixth week will be devoted for the preparation for the next training camp.
The training camp targets to gather 82 competitors and 76 coaches in 12 competition areas.
The skills competition areas are: Welding; Graphic Design Technology; Mechatronics; Web Design; Industrial Automation; IT Network Cabling; Mechanical CAD; Electronics; ITS Solution for Business; Refrigeration and Air-conditioning; IT Network System Administration; and, Electrical Installations.
“These training camps will produce a very short list of competitors for the ASC, only the best of the best will be given the opportunity to represent the country at this prestigious event,” according to TESDA Director General, Sec. Irene Isaac.
She also said that for a competitor, being part of the Philippine Team to the ASC is a great achievement by itself, and for a coach to have a winning ward at the competition is a career-building badge of excellence.
“This will provide the national technical committee an opportunity to intensively assess the current competencies and potentials of each competing team aspiring to represent the country in the ASEAN Skills Competition,” she said.
“We want to make headway in terms of the readiness of our competitors by starting the training early," Isaac added.
The Philippines bagged gold and a bronze medal during the 10th ASEAN Skills Competition held in Vietnam in 2014.
Joshua D. Mina of the CLSU-CTC Foundation in Munoz, Nueva Ecija, bested other competitors in Mechanical Engineering Design-CAD, getting the highest score in the trade area and securing the gold for the country.
In the Industrial Automation trade area, Glenn Christopher B. Silang and Jemuel Gerson S. Isnec, both of the MFI Foundation Inc., received the bronze medal.
Eight other members of the Philippine delegation who took part in different trade areas were given the medallion of excellence during the competition.
