Close to 25,000 job seekers showed up at a career fair organized by JobStreet.com in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) last week.
One of the year’s biggest job fair, the JobGantic Career Fair 2011 held August 12 to 13 in Pasay City offered a revolutionized way of employing applicants with the Hiring On The Spot (HOTS) approach which gives job seekers a chance to get instant jobs.
At the end of the two-day affair, a total of 2,470 applicants were short-listed on the spot, which means that they have passed the initial interview or examination.
Those in the shortlist either need to undergo the final interview by companies or complete their requirements.
TESDA was at the right place by joining the Career Fair to lend out helping hand to applicants whose skills do not match the jobs available, or those who need enhancing of their skills.
A number of job seekers, including fresh college graduates and returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) turned to the agency to find out how they can get technical vocational training to learn new skills or upgrade their proficiency to easily get jobs.
Job seekers eyeing work abroad were interested about the requirements in undergoing TESDA’s assessment procedure to be able to get a certification, which is now a requirement by some companies for hiring.
“In a number of cases, companies have jobs to offer, but can’t find the right people. A college degree sometimes isn’t just enough because industries are looking for graduates of specialized technical courses,” TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva said.
Villanueva said that TESDA’s promotion of tech voc education and continuous innovation of the courses it offers aim to match graduates with available jobs and ensure a steady pool of available skills.
The Career Fair gathered together 250 of the country’s top local and overseas employers that included the most-preferred employers such as the Ayala Group of Companies, San Miguel Corporation, and JP Morgan Chase, among others.
The 25,000 job hunters who trooped to the fair were among the 65,000 who pre-registered online for the 158,600 jobs available.
Many available slots during the fair were for call centers, manufacturing, factory and warehouse, food and beverage and hotel industries, which are also among the most sought-after courses in various technical vocational education training institutions, Villanueva said.
“TESDA tries to offer courses that will arm students with relevant skills for in-demand sectors so they will be productive members of the workforce later on. This is the kind of human capital we need,” the TESDA chief added.
In February this year, TESDA forged a partnership with JobStreet.com to give access to its graduates to use the job firm’s matching services and jobseekers sign-up facility for possible employment right after graduation.
Under the deal, JobStreet.com will provide a job section page in TESDA’s website that will show real-time job openings for local and overseas jobs for the technical vocational graduates.
The names of the graduates will also be available to. JobStreet.com’s employers for job matching.
