The saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure couldn’t be more true for Davao del Norte-based Julius Rosalinda.
Orthopedically handicapped, Rosalinda brought honor to the country when he bagged the silver medal and Excellence Award in the Waste Reuse category in the recently concluded 9th International Abilympics in Bordeaux, France.
Out of wine corks, box, used ribbons, pins, paint can, old wood (from a burned house), pebbles, old glass and old jigger, he was able to produce a wine rack that got the nod of the judges during the competition.
“The win of Julius Rosalinda is a major achievement for the country and for the differently abled,” Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director General Irene Isaac said.
“This significant feat sends a message that people with special needs can break barriers and succeed,” Isaac added.
Rosalinda’s journey to the Abilympics started in his hometown in Tagum City, where he is a known waste recycler.
From what he collects, his creations are endless.
His winning entry at the Kakayahan 2014 competition was a novel and well-crafted candleholder, which impressed the judges.
Very skillful and always tinkering with discards to produce useful devices, Rosalinda engages in handicrafts.
He loves to explore and experiment, seeing something beautiful that can come out of what other people see as waste.
