The regional skills competition in three regions drew to a close with new batches of technical vocational trainees emerging as winners and earning the right to compete at the national level.
The Central Luzon (Region 3) meet, conducted from September 14 to 16, was dominated by the province of Bataan, bagging seven gold, three silver and one bronze.
Pampanga came in second with four gold, three silver and two bronze, while the host province, Tarlac, had two gold, two silver, one bronze and a medal of excellence.
The event was organized by the Central Luzon TVI Federation (TVI Central) and its member associations in coordination with TESDA Region III.
In Ilocos region (Region 1), Pangasinan topped the competition with five gold, five silver and one bronze. Ilocos Norte had five gold, three silver and three bronze. This was followed by La Union with four gold, four silver; and by Ilocos Sur with four silver and three bronze.
Held from October 12 to 14, the competition was co-organized by TESDA-Region I and the Pangasinan Association of Private Technical Vocational Institutions.
The competition in Western Visayas region (Region 6) was ruled by Negros Occidental with five gold; three silver; and two bronze.
Capiz had three gold, followed by Aklan province which had two gold; three silver; and, two bronze. Guimaras and Antique had a gold each, with the latter getting an additional bronze medal. Iloilo had one silver medal.
This year’s regional skills competition was held from October 15 to 16 in cooperation with the Western Visayas Regional Skills Olympics Association, Inc. (WVRSOA, Inc.).
The winners will represent their respective regions in the Philippine National Skills Competition next year. Gold medal winners at the national level will compose the Philippine team when it participates in the ASEAN Skills Competition in Malaysia next year.
"It's a win-win situation for all competitors. Just being a part of the competition gives them the edge of displaying their skills and going forward in their careers," Irene Isaac, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) officer-in-charge, said.
"TESDA will continue to fully back these initiatives that help flourish the untapped potentials of tech-voc students," Isaac added.
Earlier, skilled trainees from MuntiParLasTaPat (Muntinlupa, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Taguig, Pateros) topped the recently-concluded regional skills competition of the National Capital Region (NCR) with six gold, three silver and one bronze for a total of 10 medals.
PaMaMariSan (Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina, San Juan) came in second, followed by CaMaNaVa (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela); Quezon City; Pasay-Makati; and Manila.
In Region IV-A or the CaLaBaRZon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), the province of Batangas emerged on top with eight gold and two silver. Laguna was in second place, followed by Laguna, Cavite, Quezon and Rizal.
Holding of skills competitions is part of TESDA’s mandate in advocating the importance and benefits of tech-voc and their contribution to the development of the country’s economy. The competition also enhances the active partnership between government and the private sector in promoting quality tech-voc education and training in the country.
The competitors were judged by a panel of jury, which gave points based on their performance. They competed in areas such as Graphic Design, Mechanical CAD, Web Page Design, Electronics, Fashion Technology, Electrical Installation, Cooking, Welding, and Beauty Care.
