From welding and electrical installation to hairdressing and fashion technology, technical vocational graduates and trainees in Central Luzon (Region 3) have started preparing for the Regional Skills Competition next month.
The regional competition is scheduled from September 9 to 10 in the province of Tarlac.
All seven provinces in Central Luzon recently held their respective province-wide search for the best, the brightest and most competent tech-voc graduates and trainees in various trade areas.
The gold medal winners will be the representatives of the provinces in the Regional Skills Competition, and possibly, in the Philippine National Skills Competition this year and ASEAN Skills Competition next year.
Secretary Joel Villanueva, Director General of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), attended the kick off ceremony of the Provincial Skills Competition of Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Pampanga and Bataan.
"Skills competition like this brings out the best and brightest from various technical vocational institutions in the province," Villanueva said.
"Each trainee or graduate is not only competing to be the best in his field, they are also competing in front of industry experts who are evaluating them, so it is also a good exposure," he added.
The competitors from various technical vocational schools will showcase their technical skills in welding, restaurant services, information technology, hair dressing, beauty therapy, fashion technology, automotive, refrigeration, and electrical installation.
In Bulacan, the competition was organized by the Bulacan Association of Technical Schools (BATS), while in Bataan, the Bataan Federation of Technical Institutions or the BaFTI, together with the member schools, took charge of this year’s competition, and the Pampanga Federation of Technical Institution or PaFTI in Pampanga.
Bataan was the defending champion in the Regional Skills and Socio Cultural Competition.
Skills competition is an integral part of TESDA’s social marketing and advocacy campaign throughout the country. It serves as a perfect venue to highlight the importance and benefits of the blue collar occupation, and how it contributes to the development and sustainability of the national economy.
In Bataan, Villanueva also awarded scholarship vouchers to 11 tech-voc schools, which will conduct the training to the beneficiaries. The scholarship slots will be under the Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP) and the Private Education Student Financial Assistance (PESFA), two of TESDA's main scholarship programs.
Villanueva also attended the mass graduation of some 1,800 trainees who have completed their courses and are ready to undergo the assessment to get the National Certificate.
