With an army of talent, the province of Tarlac formally joined the skills competition organized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) with the opening of the contest last August 19.
The provincial skills contest hopes to pick the best technical vocational students who will compete at the regional level and the national level, for a chance to represent the Philippines at the next ASEAN Skills Competition.
TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva, joined by Tarlac Governor Victor Yap, local government officials and representatives of participating schools, witnessed the opening ceremony at the Dominican College of Tarlac campus.
The Philippine Association of Higher Education and Technical Institutions (PAHETI)-Tarlac led by its president, Luisito de Jesus, helped organize the event.
"Everyone competing at the skills competition should see himself as the best in his trade and aspire to be a notch above the rest to earn the coveted spot of representing the country in the international competition," Villanueva said.
Villanueva said that tech-voc students should see the bigger picture in joining the competition.
"It is a venue for honing one's skills and showing it off to prospective employers," he added.
Members of PAHETI from the entire province of Tarlac will take part in the province-wide skills contest. The winners in the provincial skills competition will represent the province at the regional skills competition.
Tarlac has been selected host to the 2015 Regional Skills Competition to be held from September 8 to 10.
Similar to the regional skills competition in other regions, test packages used in the 2014 ASEAN Skills Competition will be used except for Fashion Technology, where the 2015 World Skills Competition package was used.
