Taguig City – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and motorcycle ride-hailing company Angkas launched today, April 6, a program that will capacitate motorcycle riders.
TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña and Angkas CEO George Royeca led the launching of the Basic Motorcycle Driving Program inside the TESDA Complex in Taguig City.
The Basic Motorcycle Driving Program was jointly developed by TESDA and Angkas, with the objective to provide formal training to motorcycle riders, and to professionalize motorcycle training in the Philippines’ Automotive and Land Transport Sector.
The five-day training program will not be confined inside the classroom but will give emphasis on actual demonstration. The program also includes conducting pre-ride activities, and monitoring and maintaining motorcycle performance, as these are essential to operating a motorcycle safely.
Further, TESDA has allocated a 400-square meter facility inside the TESDA Complex where the program will be conducted. The TESDA Regional Training Center – National Capital Region (RTC-NCR), with the guidance of Angkas, will facilitate the training.
This program will be initially implemented in TESDA-NCR to cater to the increasing number of motorcycle riders in Metro Manila. The pilot batch of 25 trainees is set to start their training before the end of April this year.
Secretary Lapeña noted that the motorcycle has become a preferred mode of transportation in the country, not only for its affordability but also because of the ease with which motorcycles can traverse congested urban traffic.
With this, Secretary Lapeña encouraged interested learners to enroll to the basic motorcycle training program.
“I would like to encourage our kababayans, especially those who are planning to work as motorcycle drivers, to avail this training. This is your opportunity to experience quality motorcycle training from TESDA and Angkas,” the TESDA Chief said.
Lapeña added that TESDA’s collaboration with Angkas aims for a well-designed basic motorcycle training program for Filipino riders.
Meanwhile, Royeca shared that Angkas’ partnership with TESDA to create a motorcycle training program is part of their continued commitment to road safety. He said that their partnering with experts and the government to ensure the proper training of motorcycle riders is vital to their goals.
“I am confident that through this program, we can empower 18 million motorcycle owners and more to help rebuild our economy,” Royeca said, adding that motorcycle taxi pilots have created a new breed of professionals.
Angkas, the most popular motorcycle ride-hailing in the country, already has around 27,000 accredited riders and over four million app downloads since its establishment in 2016. ###
